Buoy Lamp

The brief for the project was to design a desk lamp that could be shipped within the royal mail small parcel requirements.

Inspiration was taken from the motion and form of sea buoys, transforming the lamp in to a playful, interactive object with its own unique character. By engaging the user, on more than a just visual level, more meaningful attachments are made with the object.

The lamp saw a continuation of my ongoing exploration in to the dialogue between cutting edge digital manufacturing and hand craftsmanship. The light diffuser and base that houses the electrics was modelled on CAD and 3d printed. The marks of the 3d printing process have been left in the diffuser as a decorative pattern when lit that reveals the story of its manufacture. The hand turned body and lid in solid ash bring a material warmth that is often missing in entirely digitally manufactured products, proposing ways to satisfy the human need for both progressive manufacturing and the character that derives from craftsmanship.

Made with 3d printed PLA plastic and solid ash timber.
